My name is Summer and I’m organizing this fundraiser for my friend Mohammed Abu Ghanem in Gaza. Mohammed and I became friends after I learned about the Gaza Surf Club and I wanted to know the status of the members and how we, based in California, could be of any help and support. As it became clear to Mohammed and his family that building a life is extremely challenging, he has expressed the desire to leave Gaza to pursue his educational goals and be able to obtain work to support his family. Eventually, he hopes we can raise enough money to help evacuate the rest of his family, including his siblings and their young children.

As you are aware, the ongoing blockade has made the circumstances much more difficult for survival in Gaza. Your support is extremely important in this time.

Here are Mohammed’s words below:

Hello my friends, I am Mohammed Abu Ghanem, 23 years old, from Gaza. I have a family of 10 members, my mother, my father, four sisters, and three brothers. I am an information technology student at the university. I have one year left to complete my studies, but unfortunately everything was destroyed, my home and my work were destroyed. I lost my studies and now we are homeless, living in tents that are freezing in the winter and burning in the summer. The goal of the campaign is to evacuate me from Gaza to survive and complete my studies and to provide daily necessities for my family, such as food, water, and medicine. Imagine, from a young man who excelled in his studies, was an athlete, and loved life, to a young man whose life ended without a home, a job, or the minimum necessities of life.

Since the Rafah crossing is still closed, my family may need some of this money to buy food, clean water, and other survival supplies such as winter clothing, tarpaulins, and other building materials to keep our tents afloat while we wait for the crossing to open. Eventually the goal is to raise enough money to cover the evacuation of my entire family once the crossing opens. Thank you for your love and support. With your help, I hope to share happier news about my family soon.

Update!

We launched a new campaign link as the goal of the previous one was reached and the amount needed to survive as a family of ten in Gaza is currently exorbitant.

We want to make sure the goal of the funds is periodically reset to be realistic with the reality of what is still needed, while also taking into account that obtaining the money sent comes with many fees and 40% commission. We are still working towards the goal of setting aside money for potential evacuation, however the borders are still closed and funds have been needed for food, medicine, travel costs to constanty evacuate, diapers for Mohammed’s neices and nephews, etc.

Mohammed and his family, as any family in Gaza right now, will need continued support. If you have the means, please become a monthly sustainer to ensure that Mohammed can focus on survival and have his family’s financial neccessities taken care of.

If you are currently a regular giving donor, I will leave this campaign open for a month and the money will still reach Mohammed, and in the meantime please sign up on the new link. I apologize for any inconvenience!

Thank you so much for your continued support. You have literally been a lifeline and every donation, no matter how small means the world to Mohammed and his family and provides hope in a hopeless situation.

Mohammed asked me to share an update on the ongoing forced starvation. He wrote to me, “Can you describe what we are living, my mind cannot find the words to describe what we are living .” Because of the forced starvation, no one in Gaza is able to maintain normal caloric intake, and even having to explain the situation is exhausting.

Very limited aid has reached Gaza. It is hardly enough for what is needed. This means that market prices for food are still exorbitant and many, including Mohammed, have sought aid from the dangerous GHF aid sites. A fe
